Photography (fixing agent to dissolve unchanged silver salts from exposed negatives), chrome tanning, removing chlorine in bleaching and papermaking, extraction of silver from its ores, dechlorination of water, mordant, reagent, bleaching, reducing agent in chrome dyeing, sequestrant in salt (up to 0.1%), antidote for cyanide poisoning.

2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION


2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Low level of toxicity by ingestion. Large amounts may cause gastrointestinal irritation and diarrheoa.

Eye

May cause mechanical eye irritations.

Skin

Prolonged and/or repeated contact may cause irritation and/or dermatitis.

Inhaled

May cause irritation to the respiratory tract. Symptoms may include coughing and shortness of breath.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Chronic exposure may cause skin effects.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention.

Eye

Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Seek medical attention if irritation develops or persists.

Inhaled

Remove victim from exposure. Avoid becoming casualty. If effects persist seek medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

In general, dilution ventilation is satisfactory health hazard control for this substance. However, if conditions of use create discomfort to the worker, a local exhaust system should be considered.

Respiratory - wear an approved respirator in heavy dust conditions. Eyes - wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles Skin - Wear impervious gloves. Clothing - wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing to prevent skin contact. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before eating, drinking, smoking or using the toilet.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Ensure appropriate protective gear is worn.

Sweep up or shovel spill into a suitable container for reclammation or disposal. Vacuuming or wet sweeping may be used to avoid dust dispersal.

Dispose of residues and washings in accordance with all Local, State and Federal regulations at an approved waste disposal facility.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Material may decompose in a fire. When heated to decomposition emits very toxic fumes of Na2O and SOx. Incompatible with acids, iodine, lead salts, mercury and silver. Reacts violently with sodium nitrite. Hazardous decomposition products include hydrogen sulphide and sodium oxide.

Use carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder, alcohol or polymer foam.
